She is wearing a very shiny silver bikini. There is a crowd cheering.] Music: You're a superstar. Everyone knows who you are. You think you're so damn hot, hot, hot, hot. You're a superstar. Everyone knows who you are. You think you're everything, but baby, you're not, not, not. [We see now that the cage is on a stage. Rayna gets out, grabs a mic a begins to sing.] Rayna: Superstar, superstar, driving in your fancy car. Wishing you could take me home. [Back-up dancers join her as she begins to dance] Rayna: You've got the lingo and the pedigree to flip the script and get to me but you just can't get off the phone. Don't mean to burst your bubble. Don't want to waste your time. [We get a shot of the back-up singers] Rayna: I've got the feeling your priorities are out of line. Even though I know you're trouble. You're gonna do just fine. You've rehearsed your lines and now it's time for you to shine. You're such a star go on and take it away. Go on and take it away-ay-ay-ay. You play my heart with every word that you say. And toss it. You tear it, rip it up. You're gonna smash it. [Sparks start to fly in front of the back-up singers as part of a pyrotechnics display] Rayna: Shopping spree and limousines. Flash a little jewelry... [A back-up singer catches fire as a result of the sparks and begins to scream. The crowd gasps as the woman flails about helplessly. People run up with fire extinguishers and put the poor girl out. Security people rush Rayna off the stage. She looks concerned.] Security person: Get her locked down, now! [Shots of the back-up singer, security, a manager, the crowd. We take special interest in a bizarre looking fan who could easily be a perverted serial killer] [Cut to feet on a treadmill. It's Sierra and Echo exercising. Sierra stops and gets off, grabbing a towel. She stumbles a little and looks not well. She begins to fall, but Echo, was has also gotten off the mill, catches her. Sierra rights herself.] Echo: Oh... Sierra: I'm sorry. I was dizzy. Echo: I didn't want you to get hurt. You're my friend. Sierra: Friends help each other out. Echo: Yes, they do. [They both glance back at the oblivious other people in the room. Sierra walks away. Echo looks concernedly after her before following.] [Cut to Boyd Langton with his arms up, getting his arrow wound from last episode bandaged by Dr. Claire Saunders.] Dr. Claire Saunders: You shouldn't have taken the arrow out. You could have bled to death. And a broadhead arrow does more damage coming out. Boyd Langton: I'll remember that next time I'm being bow-hunted. Claire: But you're healing nicely. Boyd: So I'm certified? Claire: I really would recommend you take a few more days, Mr. Langton. Boyd: You know you can call me Boyd. Claire: Is there a reason I'd want to? Boyd: Look, if you don't certify me, and Echo gets sent out again, she could end up with some stranger as her handler. Claire: We're all strangers to them. [Boyd gets up and puts on his shirt. Boyd: She's my responsibility. And we both know there's someone out there. Someone who wants her dead. The word from upstairs is it can't be Alpha. Claire: You're certified. Boyd: Thank you. Claire: And do keep a close eye. Someone else is watching. Boyd: Someone always is. [Cut to a hooded man walking down the hall to Paul Ballard's room. He has some form of lock-pick in hand. It is Anton Lubov. He tries to pick the lock. But Mellie opens her door.] Mellie: Did you forget your key again...? [There's a moment where she looks unnerved and he looks caught. He pushes his hood off his head. He speaks with a Russian accent.] Anton Lubov: Oh, I startle you, you startle me. Mellie: Can I help you? Lubov: I'm, uh, a friend of Paul. Mellie: Really? Lubov: An old friend from, uh ... Navy. Friend from Old Navy. I did retail before. He would buy slacks. He told me he would be home. Mellie: He should be back soon. Lubov: You're a friend of Paul, too? Good friend, yeah? You're waiting by the door? Mellie: No, I just happened to... We're not... Lubov: You're making coffee in there? Enough for two? [He indicates himself] Mellie: Did you want to leave him a message? Lubov: Here. [He pulls a business card from his pocket] Lubov: Tell him to meet me Friday night at this place. Not at work. He comes by my work, he bothers me... and my bosses get very mad. Mellie: At Old Navy? Lubov: You give him card. Mellie: Bye. [She can't close the door fast enough. He raises his hood and heads off.] [Cut to Adelle DeWitt's office. She is walking out of the elevator.] Adelle DeWitt: Hello, Biz. Biz: Aha! I did try to respect your no-sunglasses rule, but what is this, a greenhouse? [Biz speaks with a British accent. He is the manager we saw at Rayna's show. They embrace and kiss on the cheek.] Biz: I'm photosynthesizing here. Adelle: All right. [She hits a button and magically all the windows dim.] Biz: Ah. Bless. [Biz removes his sunglasses and makes the sign of the cross in her direction.] Adelle: Didn't know you were in town. Biz: Rayna's at the Henry Fonda. Adelle: Not The Forum? [Biz poors himself drink] Biz: It's the pre-release. You know, the intimate evening gigs. Remind everyone that she's an artist. Actually sings the damned songs. We do the stadiums in the summer. Adelle: Sounds exhausting. I can have the twins freed up in a day or so if you need to unwind. [Adelle sits down on the couch] Biz: Someone's trying to kill Rayna. And to my utter amazement, it isn't me. Adelle: Kill her? Are you certain? [Biz sits down opposite her] Biz: Did you hear about the accident in Kansas City? Flash pot with a double charge. Girl on fire. Adelle: It wasn't an accident? Biz: Actually, it was, yes. We changed up the choreography that day. Should have been Rayna standing there. Adelle: Was that the only time? Biz: No, we had a lighting rig come loose in Philly. Got tangled up in the flies. Adelle: How's Rayna dealing with all this? [Adelle picks up some weird diorama-collage of Rayna images] Biz: I'm worried about it. She seems erratic, disconnected lately. Even moodier, if that is physically possible. Here. Have a look at this. [He hands her a stack of red pieces of paper. They have letters written on them.] Biz: Rayna's had stalkers ever since she was singing for the Mouse, but this guy... Adelle: And to think, some people don't believe in everlasting love. Meanwhile, Rayna needs to be protected and not by bodyguards. Biz: Oh, she hates those guys. Yes, feels like a prisoner, blah-bliddy blah blah blah. [Adelle goes to get a drink] Biz: Anyway, this guy can dodge them. No what she needs is someone by her side that she likes, she trusts, and will protect her without even knowing she's supposed to. Adelle: So there's a risk? Biz: Absolutely. She's got to be willing to take a bullet for my girl. [Adelle refills his glass] Adelle: I will try to make sure it doesn't come to that. What we do need is a credible reason for our Active to be in Rayna's life. Biz: Yes, well, as it happened, we do have an opening. [Cut to Echo/Jordan singing at an audition for back-up singer. Very well, I might add.] Echo/Jordan: I've got to find the freedom that's promised me. Freedom from our struggles and our misery... Rayna: I really love this song. Echo/Jordan: ...Freedom is all we need... Biz: I have the feeling that she could be trouble. Echo/Jordan: ...To heal the pain of history... Biz: I smell... attitude. [Rayna goes to stand next to Echo/Jordan] Echo/Jordan: Each day when the sun shines upon my eyes it fills me with love, makes me feel alive. I'm saving it up for a rainy day when there's no light to guide my way. Echo/Jordan and Rayna: We've got to find a freedom that's promised me. Freedom from our struggles and our misery. Freedom is all we need to heal the pain of history. Biz: Rayna, love, um, perhaps we should just take a minute to, um, you know... Rayna: Get her working. Biz: Yes, yes. You, uh, you got the job. Echo/Jordan: Oh, my God! [Everybody claps] Rayna: Why isn't she working yet? Biz: Lucky girl. Echo/Jordan: Thank you so much. Oh, my God! Whoo! [Opening titles] [Open on Topher Brink at his computer. Claire walks in holding a file.] Claire: You sent Echo out on a high-risk engagement? Topher Brink: Dr. Saunders, her, so good of you to annoy me. Claire: I had her flagged for romantic or altruistic engagements only. Does anybody read these? Topher: Her last romantic engagement turned out to be extremely high-risk. Maybe her engagement with Rayna will turn romantic. Ooh. (laughs) Claire: She's a bodyguard? Topher: She's a singer. Persona and parameter: two separate elements. Persona: she's a struggling singer who just got her first break. Yay! Parameter: she must protect Rayna, which she will do instinctively and unconsciously at all times. Claire: So she doesn't even know she's a bodyguard. And this makes what better? [Topher takes something from the computer and puts it into another big machine. He walks into the imprint room.] Topher: Who do you want? Someone who's paid to protect you or someone who wants to protect you? This is the beauty of what we do. [Topher hits more buttons in this room] Claire: And what about Boyd? He's not up to any serious physical threat. [Topher looks at her curiously. He's of the jealousness.] Topher: Boyd? What are you guys buddies now? Oh, God, of course you are. [Topher takes the imprint thing out of the big machine] Topher: You both disapprove of everything. You're gonna get married and have scowly babies. [He brings the imprint to the imprint machine] Claire: Don't be an idiot. [Topher laughs and then mimics a baby crying. He sticks the imprint in the machine.] Topher: Not to stress. We're sending in backup anyway. [Sierra walks in as Joe Hearn, her handler, opens the door for her.] Topher: Would you please have a seat? [She sits in the imprint chair] [Cut to Rayna and her dancers practicing the choreography for the "Superstar" song] Rayna: All right, stop, stop, stop. That's what I was talking about. You guys gotta come in tighter on me on the eight. You move in any sooner than that and I'm gonna be steppin' all over you like a hot mess, okay? It goes boom, pop, and seven and eight. Hit that. Rayna: And five, six, seven, and eight. [Pan over to a clothes rack, behind which Echo/Jordan and the other back-up singers are practicing. Echo/Jordan is wearing a bra and jeans. A wardrobe person is hemming her jeans.] Singers: At last. At last. At last. Singing Coach Guy: Okay, you know what, that's fine, but Jordan, softer on your consonants. Echo/Jordan: Okay, I haven't seen all the lyrics yet, so I'm kinda flying blind here. Singing Coach Guy: I need a lyric book for the new girl now! [He walks away] Second back-up singer: They're not very good lyrics. A lot of "ooh"s and "ah"s? Third back-up singer: Yeah. Wardrobe Person: Try not to move please. Echo/Jordan: Oh, sorry. Second back-up singer: So is this your first big tour? Echo/Jordan: Big one? Yes. I've been working a lot, but nothing like Rayna Russell. I mean, this is the dream gig. [The others look a little funny at that remark. Cut to a couple of bodyguards.] Echo/Jordan: What's up with all the muscle? Second back-up singer: Oh, you heard about that "accident," right? Echo/Jordan: Yeah. Third back-up singer: Well, first there was three bodyguards. Now there's eight, plus a whole security staff. Second back-up singer: And they don't bring in her fan mail anymore. What I hear, it goes straight to the police. [Back to the dancers] Rayna: Stop, stop. Let's do it one more time from the top. Echo/Jordan: And what about her? Diva or diva? Second back-up singer: Ugh. It depends on the day. I mean, she's the real deal. She's earning it. Singing Coach Guy: All right, ladies, here you go. [He hands Echo/Jordan a lyric book] [Back to the dancers and Rayna. Back to the singers practicing again] Singers: At last. [Biz walks up] Biz (to coach guy): We had to replace the monitor board, so you are gonna have to get there earlier. [Singer coach guy walks away] Biz: Thank you. Hello, girls. Wardrobe Person (to Echo/Jordan): Bra off, please. Try this on. [Second back-up singer chuckles and she and the other walk away] Echo/Jordan: Wh-? Should we, uh, go to the bathroom or...? Wardrobe Person: Honey, you've got three quick changes during the show. They're all gonna see your stuff now or later, so you might as well get used to it. [Echo/Jordan smiles and bears it as she removes her bra and hurriedly puts on the tube top] Echo/Jordan: Is it always this crazy? [Back to Rayna and the dancers] Rayna: Okay, stop! Stop! Who's eating a mint? Somebody is eating a mint! [Biz heads over to handle the crisis] Rayna: Okay, I- I can't breathe! Biz: And I think we're done here. Rayna, darling, let's get you over to the venue. Yes, indeed. [Echo/Jordan is putting on her new tiny top] Rayna: Hey, now that you're done flashing everybody, you want to roll with me to sound check? We can go over your harmonies in the car. [Wardrobe person hands her a jacket. Echo/Jordan follows Rayna out.] Echo/Jordan: Cool with me. [The other two back-up singers look on in disgust] Second back-up singer: Well, looky who's pick of the week. [Cut to a fly over of the city, to an establishing shot of a nice-looking building. Inside, there is a pool where there is a party going on. Pan over to the clothed section. Paul is making his way through the crowd. He spies Lubov looking over the railing at the city. He goes to stand next to him.] Paul Ballard: Nice view. Lubov: Look at all the pretty lights, and, uh, the people look like ants and I can see my house from here. You trying to get me killed? Paul: I wasn't followed. Lubov: Yeah, yeah, you cannot be sniffing around the family and talking to me. The Borodins see us together, we both get a death, and I don't get the nice one. Besides, the family's clean on this. Paul: They traffic girls. Lubov: Maybe, maybe not, but they don't brainwash them. Paul: I thought you got something I could use. Lubov: Yeah, yeah, I did what you asked. I start throwing the word "Dollhouse" around, my people, they look at me like I'm tourist. I can't afford that. [Lubov starts to walk away] Paul: Maybe you're too small-time. [Lubov stops] Lubov: It's a myth, okay? It's an urban legend: young people having their personalities replaced so that they could be the perfect date? (laughs) It's- it's alligators in the sewers. Paul: I've heard this song. It's not my favorite. Lubov: You got no leads. [A couple approaches to sit down near them. Lubov shoos them away.] Lubov: Anything you think you had led you to me, and I'm a dead end. [Lubov lays down where the other two had attempted to sit] Paul: You don't know what I got. Lubov: What you got is the nicest version of "fired" the BI has. See, you don't know me, but I checked you out plenty, Agent Ballard. You don't close. The Van Dynes, Illinois Gun Club, Bureau takes pity, gives you the one job you can't blow because it doesn't exist. Paul: The technology exists. [Lubov joins Paul at the railing again] Lubov: It... somebody made a monkey tango, right? It doesn't mean it's being used on people. Paul: It does. It means that. Lubov: How do you know? [Paul takes a second] Paul: We split the atom, we make a bomb. We come up with anything new, the first thing we do is destroy, manipulate, control. It's human nature. Lubov: Yeah, people are mostly crap. I don't think there's a Dollhouse. I hear different, I'll get word. [Lubov begins walking away] Lubov: Personally, I wish there was. Paul: How come? Lubov: So I could sign up, wipe all of my terrible burdens away. [He walks back] Paul: Keep you in mind. [He walks away again] Lubov: I start over, I wanna be Doris friggin' Day. [Cut to Echo/Jordan approaching Biz] Echo/Jordan: Right, so, I know this isn't my place, but I was just walking off my nerves, and I noticed there's no security by the freight elevator. And it seems like somebody could get in there. You know, if you're worried about a homicidal fan or something. Biz: Good eyes, Jordan. [Cut to Boyd in the back of the handler van. Topher is talking to him over a headset.] Topher: Sierra should come into play in a minute. Boyd: I'm glad they double-tracked this. Who's handling her? [Cut to Topher at his computer] Topher: Joe Hearn. You won't like him. Stage Person on Boyd's Screen: 15 minutes to curtain. [Boyd looks at his screen] Boyd: Echo's on in 15. Okay. Okay. [Topher, standing up from his computer and walks into the imprint room] Topher: On, my God, are you nervous? Opening-night jitters? Your little girl out there on the big stage? [Boyd] Boyd: On the stage where the last little girl caught fire? [Topher] Topher: A fair point. Boyd: I mean, her singing's not a problem. It's not, right? [Boyd] Boyd: I mean, she is a good singer. I think she's good. She wouldn't freeze up? [Topher still milling about the imprint room] Topher: She'll be fine, Mama Rose. What's the deal with Rayna? You got the inside edition. Is she cool? What's she like? [Boyd] Boyd: If you like shallow, vapid, narcissistic girls. [Topher] Topher: Really? Shallow? She seemed so earthy and normal with Katie Couric. You just can't trust people anymore. [Topher pulls an imprint out of the machine] Topher: You think you know someone. [And it is revealed that Lubov is the Doll in the imprint chair. Topher speaks to him as the chair rises up.] Topher: Hello, Victor. How are you feeling? Victor: Did I fall asleep? [Cut to an exterior of Boyd's van. We pan over to see the long line of people waiting outside the theater. We see the security scanners and people walking through them. One of them is the crazy-looking guy we saw at the show. He is sporting crutches and goes through without a hitch.] [Cut to Rayna getting ready. Echo/Jordan is close by. They start walking.] Rayna (to Echo/Jordan): Deep breaths help to prevent pre-show barfing. Biz taught me that trick when I was 12. [Biz and Sierra, who is now Audra, join them and begin walking] Biz: Rayna, this is Audra, winner of the number one fan contest. She flew all the way in from Australia. Rayna: Oh, hey, sweetie, I'd love to hang, but I've got a show to do. You understand, right? [Biz and Sierra/Audra stop as Echo/Jordan and Rayna continue] Sierra/Audra: Of course. Oh, my God, oh, my God, oh, my God, oh, my God! Echo/Jordan: That was weird. Weird adoration. Rayna: No, what's weird is that I don't even notice it. [Cut to crazy-looking guy with his crutches. He reveals that he's not really hurt and ducks into a broom closet. He begins climbing a ladder there.] [Cut to a crowd cheering and music playing. Rayna's in the cage dancing again. We see Echo/Jordan singing back-up.] Echo/Jordan and the back-up singers: You're a superstar. Everyone knows who you are. [Crazy-looking guy is somewhere dark assembling a sniper rifle. Back to Rayna, who has gotten out of the cage.] [Singers] The back-up singers: Everyone knows who you are. You think you're everything but, baby, you're not, not, not, not. Rayna: A superstar, a superstar, driving in your fancy car, wishing you could take me home... [Crazy-looking guy putting together his gun] [Rayna] Rayna: ...To flip the script and get to me but you just can't get off the phone... [He finishes his gun, descends the ladder, and exits the closet. He crutch-walks away.] [Go to black] [Open on an establishing of the theater. We cut in to see Rayna and Echo/Jordan at the after party, followed and lead by a bodyguard.] Echo/Jordan: Are you sure this safe? Rayna: This is my party. Echo/Jordan: You know all these people? Rayna: Girl, relax. We're surrounded. Echo/Jordan (to self): I know. [They walk and then we see crazy-looking guy watching her. Rayna and Echo/Jordan see Sierra/Audra on a semi-private couch. Rayna: What in the hell is this skank doing at my table? I told you... [Biz walks up] Biz: Rayna! You remember Audra, yes, winner of the online video contest? She's your number one fan. Rayna: Why do you always try to hurt me? Biz: Be a saint. [He bows out. Rayna puts on the fakest smile known to man and turns to Sierra/Audra, joining her on the couch] Rayna: Hey. You have no idea how much it means to me that you're here tonight. Sierra/Audra: Oh. My God. Rayna: Have a seat. Sierra/Audra: Ohh... [They all sit and someone brings them drinks] Sierra/Audra: Uh, I just have to say you are so beautiful and talented and you saved my life. I had your first CD before any of my friends, and, you know, I- I told them... Rayna: Okay, okay. Slow down. Listen, sweetheart. You can just hang. Okay? Turn off fan mode and turn on, um... What's your name again? Sierra/Audra: Audra. Rayna: Turn on Audra mode. Sierra/Audra: Audra mode. Okay. Rayna: What are you drinking? Sierra/Audra: Oh, it's a Shirley Temple. They're delicious. Plus, I'm a lightweight, and I want to be able to remember every single detail of my time with you. Echo/Jordan: Oh, geez... Rayna: Well, you're making us feel like alcoholics over here. Why don't you have some champagne? Sierra/Audra: Okay. [Rayna raises a hand and a girl is there with a drink] Server: Here you go. Echo/Jordan: Unbelievable. I mean, is it always like this? People just do whatever you tell them to? [Rayna nods and takes a sip of champagne] Echo/Jordan (to Sierra/Audra): If she wanted you to take off your clothes and run down the street right now, just for kicks, would you do it? Sierra/Audra: Oh. Oh, with or without my undies? [Rayna and Echo/Jordan laugh. Suddenly, an intense-looking fellow comes up fast and looks to pull something from under his coat. Echo/Jordan is on him fast and throws him over the railing and onto the couch below. He hits the floor. A camera falls out from under his jacket. Everyone joins her at the railing.] Echo/Jordan: Oh. Whoops. Rayna: Damn, girl. You need to chill. [Two bodyguards pick the paparazzo off the floor and escort him out of the room. Crazy-looking guy watches and sips his drink.] Sierra/Audra: That was so cool. Echo/Jordan: I'm a Southie. [Cut to a big office building that proves to be the establishing for Paul's place of work. Cut inside to see our pretty agent at his desk on the phone with none other than Lubov, who we now know to be the doll 'Victor'.] Lubov/Victor: So, Agent Ballard. Maybe I got something for you after all. [Cut to Lubov/Victor at a payphone in what looks to be a park] Lubov/Victor: It used to be called the Devonshire Hotel. You know, big noise back when Hollywood still had its dignity. [Paul] Paul: If it's abandoned, what am I looking for? [Lubov/Victor] Lubov/Victor: The basement. If people were being held, they probably would have been down there. Hey, I'm getting this third-hand. I still think it goes nowhere. [Paul] Paul: Then why call? [Lubov/Victor] Lubov/Victor: Because you inspire terrible pity. Watch your back. [Lubov/Victor hangs up and walks off. Paul stares at his phone.] [Establishing of an old building. Paul kicks his way in a chain-link gate and looks cautiously around with a flashlight. There is a raucous that comes from a corner and Paul turns in that direction, pulling his gun. We see many mattresses where squatters have made their homed through the years. Paul walks around and tries to open a window. While his back is turned, three men approach. One has a two-by-four, which he slams into Paul's back while he's turning around. He slams into a concrete column.] Thug with board: You wanted to mess with the Borodins? Paul: Actually, I didn't. [The guy swings again but misses. Paul knees him and grabs the board. He starts beating the thug up; he goes down. One of the other thugs comes at him. Paul defends himself with the board, putting the guy down. But the third thug raises a gun and shoots Paul in the lower torso. Paul lowers himself onto one knee.] Thug with gun: Idiot. (in Russian) What in idiot to come here alone. [The thug throws Paul's badge aside (I think that's what he's doing, anyway) and picks up Paul's flashlight. He points the gun at Paul.] Thug: Do you know who we are? We are the last faces you see. [Paul makes a swift movement and makes the guy shoot himself in the leg. He grabs the guy as another thug gets up. He shoots his comrade repeatedly as Paul uses him as a shield. He empties the clip and Paul uses the opportunity to beat the crap out of him. There seems to be some kind of nasty cracking sound and the guy goes down. The last thug rises again and Paul goes at him with the board. He knocks him down, flips him on his back, and presses the board to the guy's neck. He straddles the guy.] Paul: What do you know about the Dollhouse? Thug: I don't know what you're talking about! [Paul punches the guy hard in the face, knocking the guy out. He gets up holding his side.] Paul: No one ever does. [He reaches into his pocket for his phone. He goes down to one knee.] Operator: 911. What is your emergency? [He's down on all fours.] [Establishing shot of the theater. Hearn walks by outside, headed for the van Boyd's in. Boyd is inside looking at Rayna fan pages.] Boyd: It takes 40 minutes to get coffee? [Hearn sits down] Joe Hearn: You had eyes on 'em. 'Sides, my girl only comes into play in an extreme scenario. [He looks at Boyd's computer] Hearn: Whatcha got there? Boyd: Rayna's fan sites. There's hundreds of these things. Hearn: Ah, a bunch of crazies. Boyd: That's what I'm looking for. Our man had to have been on this somewhere. Hearn: Right. You're the ex-cop. Investigating is someone else's problem. We just keep an eye out, pull our girls when the job's done. Boyd: This Sierra is new, isn't she? [Hearn nods] Boyd: What happened to the previous Sierra? Hearn: She got the job done. [Cut to a door with Rayna's name on it. Echo/Jordan is knocking on it.] Rayna: What?! Echo/Jordan: It's me! [Rayna opens the door] Echo/Jordan: Hey. Rayna: Get in here. [She goes in and takes note of all the many orchids on a table] Echo/Jordan: Damn, girl. Rayna: Oh, aren't they gorgeous? Ohh! You know orchids are the symbol of pure affection. Yes. Echo/Jordan: Wow. You sure have a lot of them. Rayna: They help me relax. Echo/Jordan: Nice. I could use some of that. [Rayna sits down at her vanity] Rayna: Have you ever felt so unbelievably alive? (she whoops) This is going to be the best night of my life! I am ready. I am so ready. [Rayna takes a sip of what looks like fancy water. She indicated that Echo/Jordan take one.] Rayna: Go ahead. Right there. Echo/Jordan: Oh, thanks. [Rayna sings in background while Echo/Jordan walks over to get a bottle out the ice bucket. She catches site of some of those red letters on the table.] Echo/Jordan: Hey, I thought you weren't getting fan mail anymore. [Rayna turns around and looks annoyed. We get a shot of Echo/Jordan reading the red letter.] Echo/Jordan: Whoa. These people think they actually have a relationship with you. [Rayna adjusts herself in the mirror] Echo/Jordan: Shouldn't the cops be getting all this stuff? Rayna: Oh, those are old. [Rayna sits down at her vanity again] Echo/Jordan: This one isn't. It mentions last night's show. These are all from the same guy. It's him. The one they're all afraid of. You're communicating with him? Rayna: He's my number one fan. Audra's a sweet girl, but... she's got nothing on him. Echo/Jordan: Yo, he's not a fan. He's insane. [Rayna approaches Echo/Jordan, gets in her face] Rayna: What do you know? You're a background singer. A wannabe. A nothing. [Someone knocks on door] Man: Three minutes! Rayna: Show time. The biggest show ever. [She throws down the letters and exits. Echo/Jordan stands there and looks worried. She approaches the orchids and reads the note that came with them. She reads it and begins looking under the orchids. There is a red slip of paper under some of the ones in the front that read: Tonight... will be your last... Goodbye! Echo/Jordan runs out of the room after Rayna.] Echo/Jordan: Don't do this! Rayna: This is what I do. Echo/Jordan: He's gonna kill you. I think you know that. Rayna: You have no idea what it's like. Echo/Jordan: You can't go out there. Rayna: You don't tell me what I can and can't do. [Rayna gets in the cage] Echo/Jordan: You want him to shoot you. On stage. Tonight. You're crazier than he is. Rayna: I'm not crazy. [She begins rising up in the cage] Rayna: I just want to be free. [Echo/Jordan looks worried.] [Go to black] [Open on Rayna doing a sexy chair dance] [Cut to Echo/Jordan running] Echo/Jordan: Biz! [Chair dance, back-up singers, security, crazy-looking guy with gun. He is in a position where he can see Rayna through boards or slats.] Rayna: Boy, I've been watching you, stalking you, I know... you've been watching me, too. [Echo/Jordan] Echo/Jordan: Biz! [Crowd] Rayna: Are you alone tonight? 'Cause you're looking fine and I want to make you mine [Shot of Sierra/Audra on stage looking very excited] [Guy with gun] [Rayna] Rayna: I think I could be the one for you. If you think that, too, you need to make your move. [Echo/Jordan runs up to a guy with a headset on] Echo/Jordan: You need to stop the show. Rayna... Headset Guy: Jordan, get your ass stage left. Echo/Jordan: Where's Biz? Headset Guy: I'll take you there myself. Echo/Jordan: I will smack you. [Gun] [Rayna] Rayna: If you came here 'cause you want to dance, come on, baby, here's your chance. Baby, make your move. Make your move... (speaking normally) Whoo! You guys got me in the mood tonight. (Cheering and yelling) Rayna: I want you to meet somebody special. [Shot of Sierra/Audra. Rayna, however, is looking up into the rafters or something (wherever the hell gun-boy should be.] Rayna: And this person... reminds me why I do what I do. [Gun] [Rayna, who points into the rafters] Rayna: You know who you are. Come on. [Gun] [Rayna] Rayna: Show yourself! [Nothing happens] Rayna: Give it up for me number one fan! [Sierra/Audra comes out and everyone cheers. Someone brings her a mic.] Rayna: This is Audra. Sierra/Audra: What up, Los Angeles? [Cheers! And then a gun pokes its nasty head out from the rafters, held by crazy-looking guy. He begins to aim. Echo/Jordan is still trying to find Biz or anyone. She finds Biz watching by the stage.] Echo/Jordan: He's here. I feel it. I know it. Biz (to big guy): Stop the show. Big Guy: Because the background singer said so? Biz: Do it. Big Guy: There's no way psycho got through security. You know how many extra guys I hired just for tonight? Huh? Just relax. [Biz looks at Echo/Jordan. She heads for the stage.] Big Guy: Hey, wait a minute. [He tries to stop her but she knees him in the groin and continues. Another guy tries to stop her.] Biz: Hey. [Biz stops him] Rayna: Just make your move. 'Cause I think you're looking hot tonight. (blahdy-blah blah) Make your move. Make your move. [Rayna continues singing while Echo/Jordan looks around for a sight of the guy. She grabs a spotlight and canvases the rafters. We see gun guy taking aim. She keeps looking. She catches him with the light. There's a gunshot.] Echo/Jordan: Rayna, get down! [Echo/Jordan takes her down as another shot is fired. Panic everywhere and gun boy gets the hell out of dodge. Security peeps get Rayna and Echo/Jordan off the stage along with everyone else. There is mass chaos as they heard the crowd out.] [Cut to two very blue gloves holding a bandage. We're in the inside of an ambulance] EMT guy 1: We got gunshot wounds to the right lower abdomen. EMT guy 2: Can you hear me? What's your name, buddy? [We see it's poor Paul, with oxygen over his nose and mouth] EMT guy 1: Chest sounds are good; no sign of hemothorax. EMT guy 2: He's cyanotic. I thought the lungs checked out. EMT guy 1: Must be the gases. I'm gonna lay some PVC. [1 hooks up an IV] EMT guy 1: He's gonna arrest... any... minute. Here we go. [There's beeping and then a continuous beep as Paul's flippin' heart stops.] [Rayna and Echo/Jordan are let into Rayna's dressing room by a security guy. Rayna is bitch-pissed.] Rayna: What the hell is wrong with you? Echo/Jordan: With me? Rayna: You shut down my show. Echo/Jordan: I saved your life. Rayna: You've got no understanding of my life. Echo/Jordan: Okay, are there any drugs you're not on? The guy was about to put a bullet in you, which, PS: also stops the show. Rayna: You disappointed all those people. I was gonna give 'em a show. Now all they'll say is I didn't give 'em a finish. Echo/Jordan: They don't want to see you die. Rayna: Did they grow you in a lab? Do you know anything about people? They'd love to see me die. Eighty years old they'd be talking about tonight-they was there when. Echo/Jordan: Rayna... you are not okay, okay? You are having a breakdown. Not a shave-your-head, flash-your-junk whacky phase. You are truly unwell. Rayna: So he puts me out of my misery. Echo/Jordan: What misery? What have you got to be miserable about? Rayna: No. Right, uh... I got to be happy. I got to be grateful. I got to be rebellious-but just enough to give me cred, so people know I'm not a factory girl. But I am. [Rayna walks over to get some water] Rayna: I don't exist. I'm not a real person. I'm everybody's fantasy. And God help me if I try not to be. [Pours drink] Rayna: No, you weren't grown in the lab, but I was. [Takes a swig and makes a face] Rayna: Been singing for my supper since when and before when and for everybody else! God put this voice in me and forgot to make it mine. I don't feel it. I don't feel anything. For a long while. But I know he's out there, the reaper, and any minute now... (softly) boom! Freedom. There's your rush. There's your joy. I can hear. I can hear myself. Echo/Jordan: I think you hear yourself just fine. Maybe you want to listen to somebody else, like, say, ever. You don't like your life, change it. Rayna: They won't let me! Echo/Jordan: You make them let you. You're feeling pain, but all you're doing is spreading it around. God, the last thing I ever thought you'd turn out to be was weak. Rayna: I want you out of here. You say anything to Biz, I'll tell every psycho fan I got right where you live and you won't last a day. Echo/Jordan: (chuckles quietly) Oh, this gig was supposed to change everything for me and now I'm thinking it did. Rayna: Get your scrawny ass out of my space befo... [Rayna grabs Echo/Jordan's arm and tries to pull her out. Echo/Jordan pushes her back.] Echo/Jordan: You can fire me, but, bitch, don't think you can take me. Have fun with your fan. [Door opens and slams shut] [Cut to Sierra/Audra cutting through the crows, trying to get the attention of the security people] Sierra/Audra: Uh, excuse me. Sir, sir, um, I'm supposed to be inside. Uh, I'm Rayna's number one fan. I was onstage. Security person: Go around back. Ask for a guy with a clipboard. [Sierra/Audra gets tousled through the crowd but makes it around back, where she is very much alone... until crazy-looking guy sticks a hand over her mouth and pulls her screaming self into an alley.] [Go to black] [Open on a TV screen where crazy-looking guy's face is] Crazy-looking guy: Look what you've done, Rayna. You messed it all up. And I want to be able to forgive you, but... your actions lately... [He holds a gun up into frame and walks into the background, revealing Sierra/Audra in a chair behind him. He presses it to her head.] Crazy-looking guy: Who is this? [We see that Rayna and Biz are watching it. Cut to Echo/Jordan walking into the same rehearsal space from before. She walks up to Second back-up singer, who is looking up.] Echo/Jordan: I came to get my stuff. Second back-up singer: I thought something might have happened to you, too. Echo/Jordan: What do you mean? Second back-up singer: Seems like it wasn't such a good idea to be seen out with Rayna. [Echo/Jordan runs upstairs.] [Back to the screen] Crazy-looking guy: Why her? How is she your number one fan? [Echo/Jordan runs up to stand with Biz and Rayna] Crazy-looking guy: You gave her what was mine. And I know you said we could never meet in person because it... because it would diminish what we have. It would ruin our moment. Now, you will come meet me in person, and I will not shoot this girl in the brains. Biz: Lunatic. Crazy-looking guy: I kill for you, you die for me. That was the deal. I want to fulfill my part, Rayna. You have my number. Call me. [He cuts the feed, leaving the image of Sierra/Audra on the screen] Biz (to Rayna): "Call me"? You did this? [Rayna lifts her previously bowed head to look him in the eye. He backhands her across the face. Echo/Jordan shoves him up against the wall. Rayna hussles her butt down the stairs. Echo/Jordan lets him free and crosses the room.] Biz: Ten years. Never done that. She wanted this. All of it. Otherwise, I never would have... Echo/Jordan: Getting what you want may not be the best thing for a person. Biz: You're supposed to be with her. Echo/Jordan: She fired me. Biz: Does that make a difference? [Echo/Jordan thinks for a second] Echo/Jordan: No. I don't know why, but... even after everything that's happened, I... [She looks to the image of Sierra/Audra] Echo/Jordan: I have to help her. [She exits and Biz looks after her.] [Cut to Adelle's office. Adelle is sitting in her chair. The door opens and closes and Laurence Dominic walks in.] Laurence Dominic: Sierra has been kidnapped. [Adelle looks alarmed for a moment] Adelle: Ah. She drew his focus away from Rayna. Well, that was a good call. Dominic: Thank you. He handler's outside the location. I told him to wait for our team. Adelle: Yes, that's best. Echo? Dominic: On task. Still protecting Rayna. [She nods and he turns to take his leave] Adelle: Are you a fan, Mr. Dominic? Dominic: I'm sorry? Adelle: Rayna-do you like her music? Dominic: I don't know if being a fan has very much to do with that. Not at the level we're dealing with. Adelle: No. Get the girl. Close it out. [He leaves her sitting very much alone] [Cut to a bright light in Sierra/Audra's face. Crazy-looking guy walks through the frame.] Crazy-looking guy: Do it. Sierra/Audra: I don't want to. [He leans into the light, throwing weird shadows across his face] Crazy-looking guy: You got to be near her. To smell her. To touch her. This... [He brings her to her feet. We see that her hands are bound.] Crazy-looking guy: ...is your big day. [Brushes the hair out of her eyes] Crazy-looking guy: Your time to shine. Sierra/Audra: Um... I can't remember. Crazy-looking guy: Do it! [She begins singing nervously and he creepily mouths along with her] Sierra/Audra: Um... uh... Don't want to burst your bubble. Don't want to waste your time. I got a feeling your priorities are out of line. Even though I know you're trouble, you're gonna do just fine. I got a feeling it's time for you to shine. You're such a star, go on and take it away. Go on and take it away. Hey, hey. Crazy-looking guy and Sierra/Audra: You'll play my heart with every word that you say, and toss it and tear it up, rip it... Crazy-looking guy: No, no. [She whimpers and looks terrified] [Cut to Rayna practicing alone in front of the mirror. She stops to consider what the mess her problem is.] Echo/Jordan: What are you doing? Rayna: You scared me. Echo/Jordan: I scared you? After all this, I scared you? Rayna: Why are you here? I fired you. Echo/Jordan: Look, I'm not here to fight, Rayna. I'm sorry for the things I said. I just want to know how I can help. Rayna: You can leave. Echo/Jordan: Then what are you gonna do? Rayna: The show must go on. [She begins practicing again] Echo/Jordan: You can't be serious. This isn't just about you anymore, Rayna. Someone else is in danger. [She stops] Rayna: We called the police. What else do you want from me? Echo/Jordan: You know this guy. You know what he's capable of. You could stop him from hurting Audra. Rayna: I can't stop him. Echo/Jordan: You could try. She's your friend. Rayna: She's a fan. She'd want me to continue. [Again with the practicing. But only for a moment.] Echo/Jordan: Rayna... I know you don't feel anything, or think that you don't, but you will. You will if you do something to save this girl. And you will help this girl. [Echo/Jordan walks into the shadows] Rayna: What makes you think... [Echo/Jordan knocks her in the head with a folding chair. She crumples to the ground.] Echo/Jordan: Friends help each other out. [Go to black] [Open on someone busting down a door. He is followed by many other someones who are armed. It's the Dollhouse extraction team! They go through the rooms of the apartment yelling "Clear." The last one in hits "play" on the answering machine. Echo/Jordan's voice rings from it.] Echo/Jordan: Hi, fan number one. My name is Jordan. I have Rayna. I want to make an exchange. No funny stuff. I'll meet you where the original plan was supposed to go down. 'N you can have her. [Cut to Dominic bursting in the doors of Topher's lab. He is pissed. He grabs Topher up by the collar, yanking him out of his chair.] Topher: Whoa. Whoa! Whoa-whoa-whoa! [Dominic slams him up against the wall] Topher: Hey-hey-hey-hey! Ow! Dominic: What the hell's the matter with you? Are you doing this on purpose or you just terrible at your job? Topher: Uh, neither. Doing what? Dominic: Echo's off-task. Your little brainchild just backfired. Topher: Okay, okay, first of all, ow. Secondly, Echo's hardwired to protect the client. Now, sometimes these things play out differently than we anticipate. Dominic: You better check your tech! Topher: That's enough! [He pushes Dominic off] Topher: You're in my house, Lawrence! Of the two people here, one of us is a genius and the other is a security guard in a very lovely suit. Dominic: All right, genius. Tell me why Echo would kidnap the girl you programmed her to protect and bring her to the man who's trying to kill her. Topher: Wow. (laughs in chagrin) That does sound kind of bad. [Cut to crazy-looking guy leading Sierra/Audra up many stairs.] [Cut to Echo/Jordan holding a bound Rayna around the neck with one arm. Rayna has tape over her mouth. They are standing on a platform in front of a place where there is but a single railing to keep them from plummeting to the ground. Rayna whimpers.] Echo/Jordan: Hey. You wanted to die. This would be a "careful what you wish for" moment. [Crazy-looking guy is approaching them] Crazy-looking guy: Let her go. Echo/Jordan: And let her fall to her death? But then I'd have nothing to bargain with. Crazy-looking guy: You drop her, and this girl will have a big hole right in her head. This girl for Rayna... now. [He's close now and slows down with Sierra/Audra in front of him, gun to her head.] Echo/Jordan: How 'bout this? You let Audra go, throw the gun down there, and I will hand you Rayna. You can do whatever you want with her. Because, honestly, I don't care if Rayna lives. She wants to die and you want to kill her. So, basically, nobody wants Rayna to make it to tomorrow. Sierra/Audra: I do. [Hey! It's Boyd! Where the hell's he been? He looks up and hears something in the heights of the building. He's wearing a headset thing.] [The platform where all the stuff is happening] Crazy-looking guy: It's not about killing her. It's about giving her what she wants. Echo/Jordan: Then this is a big, magical moment for the two of you... Crazy-looking guy: Shut up! [He pushes Sierra/Audra to the ground. She whimpers. He points the gun at the back of her head.] Crazy-looking guy: You can't possibly understand what we have together. Echo/Jordan: True. Maybe Rayna can explain. [Echo/Jordan rips the tape off Rayna's mouth and she screams. [Cut to Boyd, turning at the sound, trying to find the source. He heads off in their direction, gun raised.] [Meanwhile, back at the bound and crying ranch...] Rayna: I'm so sorry. Please let me go. I don't want to hurt anybody. [Boyd comes up in the background, prepared to take the kill shot] Rayna: Please! I'm sorry. [Cut to Dominic and Adelle in Adelle's office. They can hear what's going on through the very powerful earpiece Boyd's wearing] Rayna: Oh, please! I'm sorry. [Boyd] Boyd: In position. I have a clear shot. [Adelle's office] Dominic: We're ready to eliminate the threat. Ma'am? Adelle: Not just yet. [Rayna] Rayna: I don't want to hurt anymore. Echo/Jordan: That's really up to him. He decides your fate, right? Rayna: No. Please. He's crazy. [Crazy-looking guy looks like he got hit by a bus] Echo/Jordan: I guess it's not love after all. Crazy-looking guy: She doesn't mean that. Rayna: I'm sorry. Crazy-looking guy: Rayna, I would never hurt you. Echo/Jordan: God, now you're changing your story, too? Crazy-looking guy: Shut up! I-I could kill you and have both girls. I could kill everybody. Rayna: No! Echo/Jordan: She doesn't seem to like that idea... Crazy-looking guy: Shut up! Shut up! I will shoot you. [Echo/Jordan makes to drop Rayna off the railing] Echo/Jordan: And then I'll let her go. Rayna: Oh, no! [Crazy-looking guy throws his hands up] Echo/Jordan: You don't want to die. You don't want her dead. This is way too confusing. [Echo/Jordan pushes Rayna off the platform. She screams and Audra gasps. It is revealed that Echo/Jordan has Rayna tied to a rope secured to a pipe. She is dangling about beneath them. Crazy-looking guy freaks out.] Crazy-looking guy: Oh! [Crazy-looking guy runs to the spot where she is tied, bringing him into close range of Echo/Jordan. She beats him away and a fight ensues. She grabs the gun and points it at him. He gets pistol-whipped. He goes down. Echo/Jordan tucks the gun in her jeans and goes to help Sierra/Audra. Sierra stands and topples a bit and yells. Echo/Jordan catches her and sets her straight.] Echo/Jordan: Whoa. Sierra/Audra: Is Rayna okay? [Echo/Jordan goes over to where Rayna is tied] Rayna: Please don't let me die. [Echo/Jordan grabs hold of the rope] Rayna: I want to live. Echo/Jordan: I know. [She begins to pull her up. Cut to Echo/Jordan and Sierra/Audra walking up to the exit.] Sierra/Audra: I will have quite the story to tell when I get back to Brisbane. Echo/Jordan: What do you mean? This is what every day is like in America. Sierra/Audra: Well, part of it was dreadful, but it was by far the most exciting, fulfilling, wonderful day of my life. Echo/Jordan: (laughs) And you're the scariest one of all. [Hearn and Boyd approach] Hearn (to Echo): That's all I need: you rubbing off on her. Echo/Jordan (to Hearn): Who the hell are you? Hearn: Audra, time for your treatment. [The two of them walk off] Echo/Jordan: What's wrong with him? Boyd: Are you ready for your treatment? Echo/Jordan: All right, but can I kick that guy's ass first? Boyd: I will seriously consider it. [Dominic and Adelle in her office] Dominic: She's a risk. An increasing risk. Adelle: She had control over the situation. Dominic: But we can't control her. I'm recommending that we send Echo to the Attic. Before someone else ends up dead, or worse, she compromises this organization. Adelle: I believe she acted in our best interest. Dominic: She went off mission Adelle: In fact, I believe she did quite the opposite. She stopped the person who wanted Rayna dead. It just happened to be Rayna herself, and by quite literally dangling the threat of death in front of her, she prevented Rayna from ever being a danger to herself in the future. Echo took the mission parameter... [Cut to Boyd and Claire standing next to each other, looking over at the Dolls. They are watching Echo as she paints.] Boyd: And did even better. She seems to have the ability to think outside of the pieces that we give her and then create... Claire: Create a new approach to the problem. Boyd: It's impressive. I don't know what it means, but it's impressive. She really is special. Claire: Special isn't always a good thing here, Boyd. Boyd: DeWitt's a businesswoman. Is she really gonna harm her best Active? Claire: Echo wasn't always the best. Boyd: You're talking about Alpha. Claire: I'm just saying, sometimes the best thing to hope for is good enough. [Rayna singing] Rayna: I've got to find the freedom that's promised me. Freedom from our struggles and our misery. Freedom is all we need to heal the pain of history. [Cut to Mellie walking through the hospital] Echo/Jordan singing: I've got to find the freedom that's promised me. Freedom from our struggles and our misery. Freedom is all we need to heal the pain of history. [Cut to Paul in his hospital bed, security outside his door, which he is turned away from. Mellie appears in the window, trying to get the guard to let her in.] Echo/Jordan: Each day when the sun shines upon my eyes, it fills me with love, makes me feel alive. [Cut to Echo walking away from the painting table] Echo/Jordan: I'm saving it up for a rainy day when there's no light to guide my way. [Sierra sees her and smiles, making her way toward her. Boyd and Claire are watching.] Echo/Jordan and Rayna together: I've got to find the freedom that's promised me. [Echo walks past Hearn and a few other men talking. Hearn looks at her as she passes.] Echo/Jordan and Rayna: Freedom from our struggles and our misery. [Sierra gets closer, but Echo shakes her head at her slightly, indicating that she not approach. They pass each other.] Echo/Jordan and Rayna: Freedom is all we need to heal the pain of history. [Echo continues on and Hearn keeps watching.] FADE TO BLACK ========================== |
